Halasana, also known as the Plow Pose, is a powerful supine yoga posture. The word “Hala” means plow in Sanskrit, and in its final position, the body resembles a traditional farming plow. This asana provides a deep stretch to the spine and stimulates key internal organs.

How to Do Halasana (Step-by-Step)

Starting Position: Lie flat on your back, legs extended, arms beside your body, palms facing down.

  1. Inhale and slowly lift both legs to a 45° angle from the floor.

  2. Continue inhaling and raise your legs to a 90° angle, keeping them straight. Bring the arms close to the sides of the body.

  3. Exhale and place both palms under your lower back for support. Use the elbows to slightly lift your waist. Tuck the chin gently into your chest.

  4. Exhale again and move your legs backward over your head. Touch the floor behind your head with your toes. Keep the legs straight and stretched.

  5. Hold this final posture for about 1 minute, breathing normally.

  6. Inhale and slowly reverse to step 3.

  7. Lower your legs back to step 2.

  8. Return to the original lying position (step 1) and relax while exhaling fully.

Important Tips

  • In the final posture, keep knees straight and avoid bending them.

  • Do not jerk or rush through the movements. Keep the transition slow and controlled.
